Teston Bridge Rebuild
Repairing an important bridge in Teston, Nr Maidstone, Kent
Project Strategic CHALLENGES
Project SYN0PSIS
Teston Bridge is a 15th Century Grade 1 listed structure over the river Medway. The stone parapet wall over this narrow bridge was struck by a vehicle knocking part of the wall in to the river below. The remaining parts of the wall were carefully demolished to enable the wall to be rebuilt. Each stone was numbered and photographed to enable it to be replaced in the same position. Divers were engaged to recover some of the dislodged stone from the river bed below. Existing mortar was sent for analysis to ensure the new mortar was an exact match. Steadline utilised in house skilled stone masons to rebuild wall. The project was overseen by inspectors from Heritage England to maintain the use of historically correct materials. Access for the works was provided by a temporary cantilever scaffold and debris netting.
